Southampton is set to see a return of the carnival spirit in 2010, with two carnivals being planned for the year.
Southampton has been without a carnival for many years, after the previous incarnation was shut down 10 years ago. However, thanks to the efforts of the Southampton Carnival Collective, the Southampton City Carnival may well return for August Bank Holiday 2010.
Southampton in 2010?
The Collective has stated that:
2010 will see Southampton’s streets and communities brought to life with colour, lights and music. Residents will be treated to a series of foot tapping carnival spectaculars.
Carnival artists and performers from across the city have been coming together to create wonderful costumes and vibrant street parade events.
We would now like to revive the Southampton Carnival. A great city event that was axed over 10 years ago.
After years of development it looks like the time has come to party in the streets.
A Mayday carnival is also being planned by the same collective, with a mix of traditional English May Day Culture with traditional Caribbean J’ouvert Celebrations lasting from dawn until late.
In another cultural development, Southampton is also set to see more national bands include Southampton in their tour lineups, with the Mo’club near Central Station is being opened up as a new music venue. The promoters behind it hope this new larger venue for the city will encourage more bands to visit the city, kicking off with an opening gig with local bands on Friday 22nd January.
